Defiance Manufacturing offers high quality custom electromagnetic and rotary tattoo machines and custom tattoo machine frames specially made for the discerning demands of the modern tattoo artist.

Over 140 years to the day the great American inventor Thomas Edison created the first ever electric pen that was used to speed up the creation of duplicate copies of content. Little did he know that within the span of just a decade and a half American Sam O’Reilly in 1851 would develop the first ink tube and needle system that would convert his electric pens, known as Stencil-Pens, into electromagnetic custom tattoo machines.  20 days after filing for his patent, Thomas Riley in London patented the world’s first single-coil electromagnetic tattoo machine. Soon after that, Alfred Charles South another Brit created the first double-coil electromagnetic tattoo machine. The groundbreaking ideas from the founders of custom tattoo machines laid the foundation for the modern tattooing approach we all know and love today. Since those heady days, custom tattoo machines have come a long way to make life easier for tattoo artists in order to transmit their beautiful works of art onto the client’s skin.

Custom tattoo machines are special made-to-order hand-held devices that tattoo artists use in order to “engrave” images or tattoos onto their client’s skin. Before the advent of custom tattoo machines and custom tattoo frames, tattooer’s had to resort to ancient hand methods of tattooing such as using sharpened bone, wood, stone, metal blades, and eventually needles, wire, and even guitar string in order to apply a tattoo. While there are respected methods of traditional tattooing that still honor this approach. Modern tattoo artists now prefer to use custom electromagnetic, and rotary tattoo machines in order to improve the tattoo process making it more sterile, faster, and more efficient for the benefit of the client as well as to reduce the painful sensations associated with the tattoo process. As with any artistically creative process, tattoo artists will use many kinds of tattoo machines, and needle configurations, just like a painter would use different brushes to apply the pigment onto the canvas.

Electromagnetic Coil Tattoo Machine – This type of machine is considered to be the original traditional mechanized method of tattooing and still the most commonly used. Over the years most of the traditional electromagnetic tattoo machine frame styles have stayed the same, while today’s custom tattoo machine builders keep pushing the envelope of design and aesthetic. These changes are usually made by altering coil configurations, frame styles and geometry, and decorative aesthetic looks of the machine overall is the popular trend.

Rotary Tattoo Machine – These Machines are powered by an electric motor, the motors can be internally engendered for various torques, and rpm speeds. These internal engineering specifications create a variety of functionality differences from a direct drive, to spring action configurations, a slider function, to a swash drive. Most models are designed to be compact, lightweight, and priced reasonably from economically to mid-range, to high end models commanding high prices.

Pneumatic Tattoo Machine – this is more of an entire system rather than just a tattoo machine, and is the in pricier high end category of tattoo equipment, that is not as commonly used. It uses an air compressor to function and requires maintenance, It is extremely lightweight and can be easily sterilized and placed in an autoclave without having to undergo any major disassembly.

Liner Tattoo Machine – A tattoo machine specifically designed to apply line work within a tattoo, with the use of round grouping needles, preferably within a signal pass.

Shader Tattoo Machine – Used commonly to shade black or different variants of black ink to achieve gradations of solid black, mid tones, and soft light grey’s, mostly used in tattoo styles like realism, portraits, black work, stippling, geometric, and tribal.

Cutback – A common variation of tattoo machine frames by altering the geometry of the front binding post, enabling the contact screw to be center directly above the front coil, used commonly on liners but is also known to be utilized to creat a faster running shader or color packing machines. Cutback geometry results in a faster running tattoo machine.
